Dubai Car Rental: How Can a Tourist Prepare for Trips to Remote Areas

When it comes to traveling to Dubai, one of the key issues is transportation, especially if you plan to travel not only to skyscrapers, but also to remote areas such as desert camps, natural areas or government offices. In these cases, renting a car becomes almost the only adequate option. Regardless of public transport schedules, the tourist gets comfort, mobility and control over the route.

Who has the right to rent a car

First, age. Most car rental companies in the UAE require the driver to be at least 21 years old. But if you are between 21 and 24 years old, then be prepared for an additional fee. In this case, it is often forbidden to take premium or off-road models. Moreover, the deposit can be twice as high as usual.

Secondly, the documents. You will need an original driver’s license. If you are not from a country whose rights are recognized in Dubai without translation, be sure to apply for an international driving permit (IDP). It is valid only together with national rights. You also need to have a passport, a tourist visa, and, in almost 100% of cases, a credit card. Debit cards are not welcome.

Financial conditions: insurance, collateral, and hidden fees

Renting in Dubai includes basic insurance, civil liability. It covers damage caused to third parties, but not your car. In order not to get into tens of thousands of dirhams, it is better to apply for extended protection.:

  • CDW – reduces the risk of an accident, but with a franchise.
  • SCDW – is more expensive, but the franchise is minimal or absent.
  • PAI – protection of life, health and personal belongings.
  • Anti-theft protection is optional, but often included in the package.

The deposit is frozen on the card, from 500 to 5000 AED, depending on the model. The money is returned after checking the car, sometimes after 20-30 days.

Additional charges may apply:

  • fee for a second driver (20-30 AED/day),
  • child safety seat rental (up to 50 AED/day),
  • GPS (30 AED/day),
  • mileage charge.

And don’t forget about Salik, automatic road tolls, and possible fines. They come with a delay of up to 25 days.

How much does the rent cost

Prices depend on the season, the class of the car and the duration of the rental. An economical sedan will cost from 50 AED/day. You will pay from 250-400 AED/day for an SUV. But when renting for a month, you can count on 1800-2000 AED. Considering the price of a taxi in the city (starting from 12 AED for a short trip), car rental is especially beneficial for couples, families or travelers planning long-distance trips.

What is important to know about the road

Dubai is a city for drivers. Wide trails, clear signs, modern navigation. They’re driving on the right side. Speed limits:

  • highways: 100-120 km/h,
  • city: 60-80 km/h,
  • residential areas: up to 40 km/h.

Violations are recorded by cameras. Alcohol driving is absolutely prohibited. The limit is 0.0%. Even a glass of wine for dinner can cost you a disenfranchisement, a fine, or jail.

Where to park and refuel

Parking in Dubai is paid almost everywhere. The tariff depends on the zone:

  • A: 4 AED/hour,
  • B: 3 AED/hour,
  • C and D: 2 AED/hour each.

In shopping malls, the first hours are free. Parking is paid for via SMS, an app, or vending machines. Gas stations are available at every step: ADNOC, ENOC, EPPCO. The average price of gasoline is from 2.30 to 2.70 AED per liter. Regular cars are fueled with 95th gasoline, sports cars – 98th.

Trips to remote areas

If you are traveling outside the city- for example, to Hatta, Al-Qudra or Al-Awir, choose an SUV with all-wheel drive. There may be sandy areas, and the asphalt is not always smooth. Take a car with good air conditioning, especially in summer: temperatures can exceed +45°C.

Permits are required to cross the border with Oman. Not every company issues them. Be sure to check in advance.

How to replace rent

There is an alternative. But it is not always convenient.:

  • Public transport – metro and buses. It’s cheap, but you can’t drive everywhere.
  • Taxis are expensive for frequent trips.
  • Tours with transfers are suitable if you just want to relax.

However, only renting gives you freedom: we went in the morning and returned in the evening, without schedules and expectations.

Conclusion

Dubai is created for those who want to be mobile. Renting a car is a way to get the most out of a trip. Get ready, get the necessary documents, choose insurance and enjoy the road. It is convenient, profitable and gives you the opportunity to see not only the city center, but also what is beyond it.
